Can We Cool the Debate Down a Notch?

By Zachary Cassidy on October 15, 2012

I recently read an article, written by Ted Nugent entitled, in which he defended gun laws, and demonized gun control advocates. Nugent uses words such as “gutless,” and “evil,” to describe gun control advocates. I am never going to agree with Nugent, I do believe that while we have the right to own weapons, limits should be placed upon the availability of such weapons; however had Nugent phrased his article differently and used respectful language, I would be more sympathetic to his argument. Nugent’s tone is reflective of a trend, which I find disturbing.

Too often do we read or hear from one-sided opinions which do not take into account the concerns of the other side. We see this in our society in the media and in everyday conversation.  I have several friends who are liberal and some who are conservative. I have found that few of them seem to acknowledge or even recognize validity in their opponent’s argument. Whether it is from a friend, or from MSNBC or Fox News, I constantly feel barraged by one-sided arguments with no respect or regard for the opposing viewpoint.

This trend is dangerous for several reasons. For example, if you go to a liberal school like Eckerd, have liberal friends (like all but one of mine here), and get your news from liberal news sources, like MSNBC or the Daily Show, then you are likely not to experience an opposing viewpoint. Distancing yourself from the other side does not make it go away; it causes both of you to be alienated, and have difficulty respecting and engaging in thoughtful debate with the other side. Instead of yelling at the other side (weather political or social issues, or over something less pressing like Eggnog V. Hot Chocolate), is it not better to sit down with them and talk respectfully?
