New Free Cooking Class Offered at The University of Idaho
The University of Idaho’s program Vandal Health, strives to offer programs and classes that help with student’s overall health. Whether it be mental health or physical health the Vandal Health office offers it. Best of all, these offerings are free to students and faculty members. One of the most popular things that Vandal Health does is their cooking class. This cooking class called Vandalizing the Kitchen which is a class centered around making healthy foods on a budget for college students. These recipes are always centered around the idea of quick and easy meals because of the busy schedules that college students have. Classes are always full every week which is why Vandal Health came up with an idea for a second cooking class.
Vandalizing the Kitchen is a weekly cooking class that has been a part of Vandal Health for some time now. A new class is being introduced by Vandal Health and the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences. Just like Vandalizing the Kitchen, Make it, Taste It, Take it is free to all students.
This class is different from Vandalizing the Kitchen because it is more hands-on, and participants get to take food home. Vandalizing the kitchen is all about passing along healthy recipes that are also cheap for those who are on a budget. This class is a hands-on opportunity to learn more about healthy food choices. The university dietitian will teach the class and various dietetic students will help with the class. All skill levels are welcome and there is plenty of help for those who need it.
Each class will feature three simple recipes that each participant will make on their own. Whatever leftovers students have they are allowed to take home. Unlike Vandalizing the Kitchen registration is required because space is limited. Registration is available at www.uidaho.edu/cooking-classes. Registration closes one day prior to the classes on Thursdays.
Students are able to contact the dietitian about earning personal fitness credit. Volunteer work is also available thought the Sustainability Center for those in need of credit or who just want to help out. Many other opportunities to volunteer with both Vandal Health sponsored cooking classes.
The next class is Thursday, January 29, from 4-5 p.m. in the Niccolls Building in classroom 101 at the University of Idaho in their food science lab. This cooking class will be offered weekly for the rest of the year just like Vandalizing the Kitchen is offered every week.
