How to Feel Like a Kid Again

By Khadija Dukes on December 17, 2014

When it’s the first of the month and the rent is due; when you have five finals to study for and one of them is biology; when you have graduated from college and you find yourself unsure of the future, you may remember what it was like to be a kid; when your only worry was what you would get for Christmas. Sure the pressures of school, of ‘the real world,’ and of the future can seem daunting and stressful, and sure you could just go to the gym and work off the stress. But let’s be honest, who really wants to go to the gym when you could just be a kid for a moment? With these tips, you will learn how to let go of your stress and be a kid again.

Eat Your Favorite Childhood Food

Eating your favorite childhood food is the quickest and easiest way to feel like a kid again. If cotton candy reminds you of the time you went to the circus or ice cream sandwiches remind you of when you used to chase the ice cream truck through your neighborhood, by all means feel free to indulge. Sugary breakfast cereals and any form of Debbie snacks would fit into this category as well, but if you are worried about the calories there are healthier alternatives for these items, such as frozen yogurt or Skinny Cow snacks.

Go Skating

Any form of skating, whether it be rollerblading or ice skating, will not only count as exercise but is also fun as well. Going with friends will make this activity even more enjoyable and will provide you with great, new memories to accompany your childhood memories. Not only that, but going skating will also give you an excuse to laugh at your friends as they clumsily fall over one another trying to skate.

Play Video Games

While you may not have access to a Nintendo 64 or a Gameboy, playing interactive games like Just Dance, Halo, or even Candy Crush can give your mind a break. This is one of the best ways to feel like a kid again as kids and video games go hand-in-hand, and the best part is, you can play alone or with others, either in-person or virtually, and still have just as much fun. Just be sure to moderate the length of time you spend playing so as not to distract you from any other duties you may have.

Go for a Bike Ride

Many people can relate to playing outside, rolling around in the grass, and going for bike rides when they were younger. Riding a bike is not only a great, healthy way to feel like a kid again, but being in the fresh air and sunshine will instantly uplift you. If you do not have a bike, you can either borrow a bike from a friend or rent a bike. If you are not much of a skater or never learned how to skate, bike riding may be a better option because once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget.

Read Your Favorite Childhood Book

Reading books like the Harry Potter books or, one of my favorites, A Series of Unfortunate Events, will recreate the wonder you once felt as a child. The ability of children’s books to inspire imagination and creativity can remind you of childhood lessons you have learned from such books, and can inspire you to incorporate a sense of child-like curiosity and excitement into your everyday life. They can also, in my case, act as a representation of what you hope to accomplish. However, if you really want to feel like a kid again just try reading Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat or any other Dr. Seuss book. The funny rhymes are sure to uplift you.

Have a Sleepover

You may think you are too old for sleepovers or may feel like having a roommate is like having a sleepover everyday. However, you are never too old to have a sleepover and you can still have an authentic sleepover even if you have a roommate. Spending the night at a friend’s house, even if they live next door, will act as a mini-vacation as you are in a new environment. Sleepovers can also give you the feelings of excitement and anticipation you once felt as a child. If you are at your own home, sleeping in the living room on the couch or on an airbed will also give you the same effect. All you will need is a great movie, popcorn and other snacks, and plenty of pillows and blankets and you will be on your way to being a kid again.
